Throughout this Corona chaos, I’ve heard a lot about “staying productive” and “figuring out how to still get work done”. While the momentum can't necessarily come to a full stop, I think we're sensing something else here...
We are being given the gift of PERMISSION. Permission to slow down. Permission to sleep more, stay in pjs all day, listen to the needs of our bodies, and not burn ourselves out.
The idea of permission has been so resonant for me recently. There have been times where I have felt pressure, guilt, and anxiety about not “grinding” enough. In those moments, I would have felt very differently if I had been given permission to take the pressure off, whether it was given by myself or someone else.
I realized it’s ironic that kids get permission slips, when adults may be the ones who need them the most. So… I created an adult permission slip! It started as a joke, and now it’s something I use regularly not only with clients, but also friends. It’s SO powerful to have something physically that says you have permission to do something you normally would judge yourself for. There’s even a space on the slip for a “supportive co-signer” so you can have the support of someone else. For example, with the current WFH situation, why not give yourself permission to have a judgment-free day where you don’t get out of bed? Or give yourself permission to put yourself first and have a treat yourself day instead of being the go-to caretaker for your family and friends? Or how about giving yourself permission to have a one-day work sprint and get as much work done as possible so you can take it easy the next day?
Yes, this situation is a total cluster-f, and it’s also an opportunity. What would look different in your life if you gave yourself some permission? What do you need a permission slip for?
